With Canada having such a strict policy on wearing a facemask they have truly seen the benefits.

Plastic face shields have been used in the health care setting for many years, but are they more effective to protect you against airborne infection than a disposable face mask. The simple answer is NO - 3ply disposable face masks provide superior protection against harmful airborne droplets.

In the medical setting the plastic clear face shields are typically used to protect to protect a healthcare professional against droplets from splashing up into their eyes or hitting their face. If you wear glasses when wearing a face mask I'm sure you are aware of the fog up issue. When wearing a face mask with glasses the fogging up issue can not only be an inconvenience but may at some times be a safety hazard.

The moisture from your breath can cause a fog or moisture build up on your glasses when wearing a disposable face mask when you are out in public. The first reaction to fix this problem might be just to switch to contacts but we all know that costs money and sometimes isn't always an options.

The Berry Amendment was named after a US House of Representatives member Ellis Yarnal Berry who introduced an amendment called the Buy American Act which encourages and mandates the government to buy American goods. The Berry Amendment was implemented in 1941 to protect the textile clothing industry during times of war. New research suggests that face masks are helping to reduce the transmission of the virus, some masks are more protective than others it's proving beneficial to wear a mask when in public! As face protection emerges as the solution and weapon to fight this coronavirus the evidence is becoming more and more obvious that wearing a mask is the way to go.

The CDC released a statement that there are new studies that show wearing a mask helps reduce transmission of the disease. Experts do caution that widespread masking doesn't eliminate the need to follow other recommendations like proper hand washing and social distancing. Face shields are good but don't sure as proper protection when in close range with other people, the protection a facemask offers is far superior.

Does the Face Mask have an ASTM Rating? ASTM Internation is an organization that develops and publishes Global Standards for an expansive array of products, services, and materials. There are almost 13,000 ASTM stands used around the world today! For face masks, the standard that must be complied with is the ASTM F2100 standards.

What Level is the Mask Certified for? There are (3) different levels of surgical masks in which the ASTM Standards rate for; Fluid Resistance, Breathability, Bacterial Filtration (BFE), Particulate Filtration (PFE), and Flammability. The following Pictures shows an illustration of the testing:

Every time we go out in public we are encouraged to wear a facemask, most prefer a disposable face mask. Here are some dos and don'ts of wearing a mask. The CDC has published a guide but we'll mask it easy to understand!

Things to DO:

• Wear a mask whenever you go out.
• Ensure your facemask has multiple layers to provide a filter against harmful viruses
• Make sure the mask fits comfortable around your face
• Remember to wash your hands prior to putting on your facemask

• Continue to practice Social Distancing even when wearing a mask
• If you are visiting an older family member or friend it is a good idea to keep your disposable facemask on at all times
• After your medical mask has shown signs of soiling or smells you should throw it away.

Things NOT to do:

As you drive around these days you see a lot of cars with face masks hanging from the front mirror, is this recommended? We say NO, it's best to keep your mask in a clean place....but let's explain more!

It's great to see all the different masks that everyone is wearing these days from handkerchiefs to an old piece of fabric but in the main, you will find either cloth masks or disposable 3ply masks being worn. When wearing a 3ply mask we recommend only wearing to for one day if you have been out in public for an extended period of time, wearing a face mask over and over again without caring for it or disposing of is not a good idea. If you think about the moisture and bacteria that are building upon the mask will cause you to treat it with care. If the mask is soiled or smells in any way don't wear it again.

Another note on hanging the face mask from your rear-view mirror, on the hot days the air condition can also blast any bacteria that is on the mask around the car - not a good idea!

So common practise for keeping a mask clean to bring a zip lock bag along with you in the car, to safely store it when it's not being used! Always keep an extra box of masks in your car so you have spare or if an unexpected passenger shows up. Also, remember to sanitize your hands after taking your mask off.

It is important to learn how to properly wear face masks during these times. Even though masks are touted as the best thin since social distancing that has been put in place. Masks are effective only if they cover your mouth, nose, and chin. However tempting it may be to remove your mask for a moment, during that time you could expose your face to the very virus you're trying to avoid, keep that in mind when wearing a mask. Following are the steps to wearing a Mask:

• Properly Wash your hands
• Only wear clean breathable face masks, re-wearing the same mask could expose you to contaminants - having a USA made mask is a bonus...lol
• Put on your mask by holding the ear loops
• Your mask should fit snugly against the side of your face with no open flaps - but it shouldn't be so tight that you can breath - kinda a good point, huh!
• The mask you have most likely has a nose wire that travels over your nose you can press down on this to maximize comfort and reduce the possibility for contaminates to enter through the top of the mask.
• The next step is to confirm your nose, mouth and chin are covered.
• If your mask has pleats they should open downwards on the front of the mask.
• Pull your mask up so it covers your nose and tug it down so it covers your mouth.
• After you've put your mask on, don't touch it again until it's time to take it off!
